CCU (MID SEMESTER TEST)

 MID SEMESTER TEST

CROSS CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING

SEMESTER V

Name    : Desi Maranata

Class    : 5.1

NIM    : 1888203022

Please answer the questions below briefly:

1. Give your own idea/opinions about:

a.  Culture

The word "culture" derives from a French term, which in turn derives from the Latin "colere," which means to tend to the earth and grow, or cultivation and nurture. In my opinion, culture is a characteristic or habit of a group of people / tribe residing in a certain place. Generally, culture is symbolized as the identity of a nation or group of people. Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, etc.

b. Interculture

In my view, Interculture describes communities in which there is a deep understanding and respect for all cultures. Interculture communication focuses on the mutual exchange of ideas and cultural norms and the development of deep relationships. In an intercultural society, no one is left unchanged because everyone learns from one another and grows together.

c. Cross culture

In my mind, Cross-culture deals with the comparison of different cultures.  In cross-cultural communication, differences are understood and acknowledged, and can bring about individual change, but not collective transformations. In cross-cultural societies, one culture is often considered “the norm” and all other cultures are compared or contrasted to the dominant culture.

d. Multiculture

I think, Multiculture refers to a society that contains several cultural or ethnic groups.  People live alongside one another, but each cultural group does not necessarily have engaging interactions with each other.  For example, in a multicultural neighborhood people may frequent ethnic grocery stores and restaurants without really interacting with their neighbors from other countries.

2. Give one example of cultural conflict and offer the solution for its adjustment!

people do not care about their own culture and tend to be attracted to outside cultures.

The solution is by instilling a love of the country from an early age, and preventing too many foreign cultures from entering.

3. How do you define:

a. Mosaic is a society in which ethnic groups retain their separate identities but together from the larger community.

b. Melting pot is a term coined from a turn-of-the-century play by Israel Zangwill. Its use has historically expressed a monocultural goal to fuse and assimilate peoples from various newand old immigrant groups into a new common American society based ondominant Anglo Western cultural ideals, values, language and customs.

c. Stereotype is aset of exaggerated and inaccurate. Generalizations about a group or category of people that is either favorable or unfavorable.

d. Prejudice is an unfavorable attitude toward any cate-gory or group of people based on asimple or an elaborate series of negative traits assumed to be uniformly distributed among the people toward whom one is antagonistics

4.Current Research on ICT in ELT (What can you draw for the current research trend in media of ELT ?)

Creating and sharing content, While there’s much online content already out there for learners, some programmes and apps allow learners to produce their own content and share what they have created with others. Popular online sites like Quizizz  and Socrative  allow both teachers and students to create online games and play games that are shared by users from around the world. Websites like Canva allow teachers and learners to express their creativity through posters, social media memes and banners. Then there are mindmapping sites, comic-strip creation sites and movie-editing/movie-making sites. Using content-creation tools like these allow learners to use language creatively, and turn language practice into a fun and engaging activity. ELTons finalist Brick by Brick  (StandFor/ FTD Educaçāo) is one such course for younger learners that has them creating and embarking on hands-on projects as they learn.

5.The Advantages of ICT in ELT (Define some advantages of ICT in ELT)

- Motivating Factor.

The Internet can act as a motivating tool for many students. Young people are very captivated with technology. Educators must capitalize on this interest, excitement, and enthusiasm about the Internet for the purpose of enhancing learning. For already enthusiastic learners, the Internet allows you to provide them with additional learning activities not readily available in the classroom.

- Fast Communication.

The Internet promotes fast communication across geographical barriers. Your students can join collaborative projects that involve students from different states, countries or continents. This type of learning experience was not possible before the Internet. This is a unique learning experience very essential for each of our students, as the world is becoming one big community.

- Cooperative Learning.

The Internet facilitates cooperative learning, encourages dialogue, and creates a more engaging classroom. For example, a LISTSER V for our class will allow your students to get involved in class discussions through e-mails in a way not possible within the four walls of the classroom.

- Locating Research Materials.

Apart from communication, research is what takes many people to the Internet. There are many more resources on the Internet than the school library can provide. We can encourage students to take advantage of this wealth of resources on the Internet for their research.

- Acquiring Varied Writing Skills

If students are required to publish their work on the Internet, they have to develop hypertext skills. These skills help students gain experience in non-sequential writings. Moreover, and since the Internet is open to all with access, students publishing their work on the Internet are forced to be mindful of their language and to write to non-expert audience.

6.Possible  SPACE for Research (Try to find the possible topic for research of media ICT in ELT)

Teaching English with Hand-held Devices

7.Concluding Remarks (make a conclusion from your own reading materials)

ICT is a form of advanced science technology must be optimized function, especially in the implementation of learning. ICT provides opportunities for students in the era of global competition needs to obtain adequate supplies. through innovative ICT-based learning can provide vast opportunities for students to hone and promote competence on an international scale. On the other hand, mental attitude and self-reliance in accessing any information necessary learning independently influence the value teaching student’s character it does not always depends with others. Simple Things Bring Blessings!

Since the first time the corona virus or Covid-19 became epidemic in Wuhan, China - the World Health Organization or WHO immediately reminded the world community to adopt a clean and healthy lifestyle. On March 6, 2020, Indonesian government has issued a main protocol in handling cases of corona virus spread (Control, Ministry of Health. Then on February 17, the government revised the protocol strengthening.COVID-19). The protocol was drafted jointly between the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) together with various ministries, especially the Ministry of Health, aimed at becoming the main guideline so that it is easily implemented by anyone. by implementing various health protocols will be able to help us to avoid this corona virus. So, how do you implement the correct health protocol?

first, keep your hands clean. WHO recommends basic protection measures against the corona virus. The first recommended step is to wash your hands frequently. This step is recommended because washing hands regularly and thoroughly will kill any viruses that may be present on the hands. Washing hands is an easy and safe step to protect yourself from the corona virus COVID-19, If under certain conditions, there is no water and soap or cannot use water and soap to clean your hands, another solution is to use a hand sanitizer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using hand sanitizers based on at least 60 percent alcohol. Although it can help reduce the number of germs on the hands quickly, hand sanitizers cannot eliminate all types of germs, not as effectively as washing hands. Hand sanitizer also can not remove dirt and oil on the hands.

second, take care of health. Mario, who is known on Twitter through the @fxmario account, said however that sport is an important aspect in maintaining the health of the human body. Besides Mario reminded that exercise can be done anywhere, no need to be in the gym or out of the room. At least 150 minutes per week is done routinely, he added, 30 to 60 minutes per session for 3-4 days a week. Aside from exercising, Mario also reminded  to eat a balanced diet every day for the health and long-lasting resistance of the Covid-19 pandemic. "Avoiding fried foods. The maximum sugar consumption is 25 grams per day according to WHO. Increase consumption of vegetables and fruit, "said Mario.

Third, apply ethics coughing and sneezing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, following the suggested ethics to help stop the spread of germs and viruses:Cover mouth and nose with cough or sneezing compilation tissue,Put used tissue in the waste basket, If you don't have a tissue, cough or upper arm, not a hand, the CDC also recommends washing hands after sneezing or coughing using running water and soap.

fourth, Wear a Mask and Keep Your Distance. In the latest guidelines, the World Health Organization (WHO) requires that everyone wear a mask when in public, during this pandemic. A study overseen by WHO, recently proved this mask and keep a distance can reduce the risk of disease transmission by 85 percent. As we know, the SARS-CoV-2 corona virus spreads through respiratory droplets or breathing when coughing and sneezing.Because 25 percent of people who oppose the SARS-CoV-2 corona virus may not be a problem, everyone supports wearing masks and keep a distance.

in conclusion, by applying this guide it is hoped that it can minimize the risks and impacts of the increasingly rampant Covid-19 pandemic, hopefully we can embrace and discipline each other in implementing health protocols, so that this pandemic can be ended soon and we can be normal back to normal.

Thesis statement: how to avoid hoax news on social media
Body 1: develop your curiosity at any time.
Body 2: find out the authenticity of the site's page address
Body 3: be carefull with provocative titles

Kick hoaxes, save our life!

According to Oxford Learner's Dictionaries hoax is a news that is not true, which aims to convince others of it and harm others. As we  can see  there has been a lot of news Hoax which is very weightless from some previous events. It is  very harmless for those who are affected by the Hoax news, besides looking polluted, it will also cause conflict with each other if we already trust it. Various ways have been taken by the government to eradicate the news of this "Hoax", but it is not enough for the Hoax maker to continue doing this unlawful work. so,we as smart netizen should know  how to avoid hoax news on social media.
First, develop your curiosity all the time. based on study by the Journsl Perspectives on Psychological Science, in  supporting the academic field, curiosity is very important.Do not immediately spread a news without checking the truth. According to Tom Stafford, a psychologist from The University of Sheffield we get a lot of benefits by being more curious or curious. Meanwhile, education today does not prevent much of the thinking of open society. In fact, curiosity has proven that science can open more open thinking. So, you are not blind with just one ideology. so we must find the truth based on the facts that there are not hoax.
second, find out the authenticity of the site's page address. If we get news from an article, try to pay attention to the link. Whether the link is in the form of a blog or original news media. Don't be fooled, sometimes there are people who are not responsible for making hoax news by using links that are similar to the original news media. That is so many hoax news in Indonesian, reporting from the Press Council, in Indonesia there are more than 43,000 sites that claim to be the news media. However, it has not been verified to 300.
Third, be careful with provocative titles Often, hoax news has titles that invite sensation, such as provoking or provocative. Even more horrified, sometimes the contents are taken from the media or official newspapers. It's just a little changed to fit the perception of hoax makers. For that, try to take the newspaper to ensure the truth. It can also check it by surfing the internet. You can read the existing news media. With its credibility, it is certain that the media checks the truth before it is broadcast to the public. Try to see if there are differences.
In  conclusion, because now there are still some who spread the news of the Hoax for personal gain and bring down others even more dangerous to create national divisions. Our role as an intelligent community is to participate intelligently in reading a news, do not immediately believe when responding to an issue that we should look at and look for the facts first or ask people better understand and understand the theme of the news we read.
