Definition of Semantics
Semantics comes from the Greek 'sema' (noun) which means 'sign' or 'symbol'. the verb is 'semaino' which means ', mark' or 'symbolize'. what is meant here is a sign or symbol linguistic signs (french: signe linguistique).

Semantics as one of the branches of pure linguistics is simply defined as the study of meaning in language.

There are at least seven types of meaning (many linguists state their different categories of meaning) in semantic according Geoffrey Leech (1974), those are:

1. Conceptual meaning (logical, cognitive, or denotative content)
It refers to the dictionary meaning which indicates the concepts.

walk as an example, the conceptual meaning or the primary dictionary meaning is to move forward by placing one foot in front of the other

2. Connotative meaning (what is communicated by virtue of what language refers to)
It refers to the associations that are connected to a certain word or the emotional suggestions related to that word.
That woman is a dove at heart.  Here, the dove implies peace or gentility.
Theres no place like home.  While home may refer to the actual building someone lives in, connotatively, it most often refers to family, comfort, and security.


3. Social meaning (what is communicated of the social circumstances of language use)
It refers to the usage of language in and by society which has big proportions in determining the meaning that certain speaker has to use and wants to convey, those factors include social class of the speaker and hearer and the degree of formality.
 a.       mother (formal), mom (colloquial),
b.      mama (childs language)
c.       dollar (neutral)  buck (slang)
d.      father, papa, old boy


4. Affective meaning (what is communicated of the feeling and attitudes of the speaker/writer)
It refers to the speakers feeling / attitude towards the content or the ongoing context.It is important to remember that each individual will have a different affective meaning for a word. As such, only the person using a word will be aware of the particular affective meaning that they hold with the word.
 'nurse.' Most people automatically associate 'nurse' with 'woman.' This unconscious association is so widespread that the term 'male nurse' has had to be coined to counteract its effect."

"[W]hen some people hear the word 'pig' they think of a particularly dirty and unhygienic animal. These associations are largely mistaken, at least in comparison with most other farm animals
For example, the slogan of Mcdonals is Im Lovin It. The word Lovin It as the evidence that this sentence describes the writers and readers feeling towards the product.

5. Reflected meaning (what is communicated through association with another sense of the same expression) In order to get people attention to be quiet, we might say either (1)Im terribly sorry to interrupt,  but I wonder if you would be so kind as to lower your voice as a little or (2) Will you belt up. Factors such as intonation and voice timbre are also important here. The impression of politeness in the sentence (1) can be reserved by tone of biting sarcasm; sentence (2) can be turn into a playful remark between intimates if delivered with the intonation of a mild request.




6. Collocative meaning (what is communicated through association with words which tend to occur in the environment of another word) heavy news (a piece of sad news); heavy schedule (a very tight schedule); fast color (the color that does not fade); fast friend (a reliable friend); fast woman (a lady of easy virtue), etc. eavy smoker (a person who smokes a lot);

7. Thematic meaning (what is communicated by the way in which the message is organized in terms of order and emphasis)

a.       I have not read this book,
b.      This book I have not read,
c.       It is this book (that) I have not read,
d.      This book has not been read by me.
The meaning arising out of the way in which the writer or speaker organizes his message is called thematic meaning. The examples are:
a.       Tomorrow I plan to have an outing.
b.      I plan to have an outing tomorrow.
S1seems to answer the question: When will you have an outing?;     S2 What will you do tomorrow?

1. I will do it tommorow. (In neutural way)

2.tomorrow,i will do it.(showing a promise)

Teori Pendidikan ala 'John Dewey"

John Dewey adalah seorang filosofi asal Amerika yang lahir pada 20 oktober 1859 di Burlington, Vermont, Amerika Serikat. Dia adalah orang yang pertama kali menemukan teori (metode)  'belajar sambil melakukan'(learning by doing).

Menurut Dewey, kita hidup dalam dunia yang belum selesai penciptaanya. Sikap Dewey dapat dipahami dengan sebaik-baiknya dengan meneliti tiga aspek yang dinamakan instrumentalisme. ini juga dianut oleh William James, Yaitu:

1.  Temporalisme yaitu adanya gerak dan kemajuan nyata dalam waktu.
2. Futuralisme yaitu mendorong kita untuk melihat hari esok dan tidak pada hari kemarin.
3. Milionarisme yang artinya dunia dapat dibuat lebih baik dengan tenaga kita.

KONSEP PENDIDIKAN JOHN DEWEY

Dewey memberikan prioritas pada kegiatan yang bermakna dalam pembelajaran dan partisipasi dalam demokrasi kelas. Siswa harus diinvestasikan dalam apa yang mereka pelajari. Dewey berpendapat bahwa kurikulum harus relevan dengan kehidupan siswa.

Dewey elaborated upon his theory that "school reflect the community and be patterned after it so that when children graduate from school they will be properly adjusted to asssume their place in society"

(pendidikan harus mampu membekali anak didik sesuai dengan kebutuhan yang ada pada lingkungan sosialnya. sehingga,  apabila anak didik tersebut telah lulus dari lembaga sekolah ia bisa beradaptasi dengan masyarakat)

untuk menerapkan konsep tersebut, Dewey mengajukan dua metode dalam pengajaran, yaitu:

1. problem solving method, dengan metode ini anak dihadapkan pada berbagai situasi dan masalah-masalah yang menantang, dan anak didik diberi kebebasan sepenuhnya untuk memecahkan masalah-masalah sesuai dengan perkembangan kemampuannya. Dalam proses belajar mengajar model ini guru bukannya satu-satunya sumber, bahkan kedudukan seorang guru hanya membantu siswa dalam memecahkan kesulitan yang dihadapinya. Dengan metode semacam ini, dengan sendirinya pola lama yang hanya mengandalkan guru sebagai satu-satunya pusat informasi (metode pedagogy) diambil alih kedudukannya oleh metode andragogy yang lebih menghargai perbedaan individu anak didik.
2. Kedua, Learning by doing. Konsep ini diperlukan untuk menjembatani kesenjangan antara dunia pendidikan dengan kebutuhan dalam masyarakat. Supaya anak didik bisa eksis dalam masyarakat bila telah menyelesaikan pendidikannya, maka mereka dibekali keterampilan-keterampilan praktis sesuai dengan kebutuhan masyarakat sosialnya.

Teori Konstruktivisme

Beberapa kalangan menyebutkan bahwa pendiri teori konstruktivisme adalah Jean Piaget. Namun John Dewey sering dikutip sebagai pendiri filosofis dari pendekatan teori konstruktivisme ini. Bruner dan Piaget dianggap sebagai ahli teori utama di antara konstruktivis kognitif, sementara Vygotsky adalah ahli teori utama di antara konstruktivis sosial.

Dalam konstruktivisme John Dewey menolak anggapan bahwa sekolah harus fokus pada pengulangan, hafalan yang menghafal & mengusulkan metode "hidup terarah" - siswa akan terlibat dalam lokakarya praktis di dunia nyata di mana mereka akan menunjukkan pengetahuan mereka melalui kreativitas dan kolaborasi. Siswa harus diberi kesempatan untuk berpikir dari diri mereka sendiri dan mengartikulasikan pemikiran mereka.

Dewey menyerukan agar pendidikan didasarkan pada pengalaman nyata. Dia menulis, "Jika Anda ragu tentang bagaimana pembelajaran terjadi, terlibatlah dalam penyelidikan berkelanjutan: belajar, merenungkan, mempertimbangkan kemungkinan alternatif dan sampai pada keyakinan Anda yang didasarkan pada bukti."

John Dewey mengemukakan bahwa belajar tergantung pada pengalaman dan minat siswa sendiri dan topik dalam kurikulum seharusnya saling terintegrasi bukan terpisah atau tidak mempunyai kaitan satu sama lain. Sugihartono dkk, 2007 dalam (Just Weare Noegayya 2012). Apabila belajar siswa tergantung pada pengalaman dan minat siswa maka suasana belajar siswa akan menjadi lebih menyenangkan dan hal ini akan mendorong siswa untuk berfikir proaktif dan mampu mencari pemecahan masalah, di samping itu kurikulum yang diajarkan harus saling terintegrasi agar pembelajaran dapat berjalan dengan baik dan memiliki hasil maksimal

Menurut John Dewey, pendidikan adalah rekonstruksi atau reorganisasi pengalaman yang menambah makna pengalaman, dan yang menambah kemampuan untuk mengarahkan pengalaman selanjutnya. Seperti telah diuraikan di muka bahwa dalam teori konstruktivisme disebutkan bahwa permasalahan muncul dibangun dari rekonstruksi yang dilakukan oleh siswa sendiri, hal ini dapat dikatakan bahwa dalam pendidikan ada keterkaitan antara siswa dengan permasalahan yang dihadapi dan siswa tersebut yang merekonstruksi lewat pengetahuan yang dimiliki.

Dapat disimpulkan, bahwa pendekatan konstruktivisme mempunyai beberapa konsep umum seperti:

1. Pelajar aktif membina pengetahuan berasaskan pengalaman yang sudah ada.
2. Dalam konteks pembelajaran, pelajar seharusnya mampu membina pengetahuan mereka secara mandiri.
3.  Pentingnya membina pengetahuan secara aktif oleh pelajar sendiri melalui proses saling memengaruhi antara pembelajaran terdahulu dengan pembelajaran terbaru.
4. Unsur terpenting dalam teori ini ialah seseorang membina pengetahuan dirinya secara aktif dengan cara membandingkan informasi baru dengan pemahamannya yang sudah ada.
5.  Ketidakseimbangan merupakan faktor motivasi pembelajaran yang utama. Faktor ini berlaku apabila seorang pelajar menyadari gagasan-gagasannya tidak konsisten atau sesuai dengan pengetahuan ilmiah.
6.  Bahan pengajaran yang disediakan perlu mempunyai perkaitan dengan pengalaman pelajar untuk menarik minat pelajar.

So kali ini kita akan mempelajari mengenai semantik, semantik adalah salah satu dari cabang ilmu linguistik yang akan saya pelajari lebih dalam. Tentu hal ini sangat menarik bukan? mari kita sama-sama menyimak ya:)

pengertian semantik menurut para ahli:

1. Grifiths (2006:1) : semantics is the study of the "toolkit" for meaning: knowledge encoded in the vocabulary of the languange and in it's patterns for building more elaborate meanings, up to the level of sentence meanings. (semantik merupakan studi tentang makna: pengetahuan tentang kode dalam kosakata bahasa dan pola untuk membangun makna yang lebih rumit, sampai ketingkat makna kalimat)
2. Dr. Mansoer Pateda : semantik adalah subdisiplin linguistik yang membicarakan makna.
3. Charles Morrist : semantik menelaah hubungan-hubungan tanda dengan objek yang merupakan wadah penerapan tanda-tanda tersebut.
4. Hurford dan Heasley: kata semantik sebenarnya istilah teknis yang mengacu pada studi tentang makna kata.

Semantik berasal dari bahasa Yunani 'sema' (kata benda) yang berarti 'tanda' atau 'lambang'. kata kerjanya adalah 'semaino' yang berarti ',menandai' atau 'melambangkan'. yang dimaksud tanda  atau lambang disini adalah tanda-tanda linguistik (perancis : signe linguistique).

semantik adalah ilmu yang mempelajari tentang makna dari suatu bahasa. semantik lebih berfokus pada hubungan/relasi  antarkata, frasa, termasuk bagaimana makna dari kata tersebut. pada ilmu ini kita bisa mengetahui bahwa satu bahasa bisa memiliki makna berbeda  atau ganda (poisemi). oleh karena itulah saya memilih semantik sebagai cabang dari ilmu linguistik yang ingin saya pelajari lebih dalam. saya merasa diera sekarang ini banyak orang yang salah mengartikan makna dari suatu bahasa sehingga sering terjadi miss comunication, hal ini akan berdampak tidak baik ya guys. so kita harus benar-benar bisa memaknai suatu bahasa dengan makna yang benar sehingga kita bisa berkomunikasi dengan baik, jadi memperdalam semantik adalah solusinya:).

Semantik biasanya berhubungan dengan dua aspek lain, yaitu sintaks ( pembentukan simbol kompleks dari simbol yang lebih sederhana), dan pragmatis (penggunaan praktis simbol oleh rakyat dalam konteks tertentu).

Jenis-jenis semantik :

1. semantik behaviorisme, makna berada dalam posisi di antara stimulus dan respon atau pertanyaan dan jawaban. contoh : ibu menyuapkan makanan pada sibayi.
2. semantik deskriptif merupakan salah satu kajian semantik yang membahas tentang makna dalam konteks terkini contoh: (sekarang) juara: orang yang mendapat peringkat teratas. (sebelumnya) juara: pengatur atau pelerai dalam persabungan ayam.
3. semantik generatif memiliki beberapa konsep, yakni kompetensi, struktur luar, dan struktur dalam( buku Chomsky 1957). 
4. semantik gramatical merupakan kajian makna dalam semantik yang khusus mengkaji makna dalam satuan kalimat. contoh : masih duduk, kakak sudah tidur.
5. semantik historis, studi makna yang dikaji lebih memacu pada rentangan waktu, bukan perubahan bentuk kata. pada hal ini, semantik membandingkan kata-kata berdasarkan periode atau antar kata pada masa tertentu dengan kata pada bahasa lain. contoh : (B.Indonesia): padi (B.Jawa): pari \fonem /d/ dan/r/ berkorespondensi.
6. semantik leksikal merupakan pembahasan makna yang lebih menitikberatkan pada makna kata sebagai satuan mandiri. contoh: absurd (KBBI): tidak masuk akal;mustahil.
7. semantik logika, pengkajian makna lebih diarahkan pada logika. artinya, setiap kalimat akan dilihat dari logikanya untuk mendapatkan sebuah makna dari kalimat tersebut.
8. semantik struktural bermula dari pandangan struktural yang dipelopori oleh saussure. para penganut strukturalisme mempunyai pandangan bahwa setiap bahasa merupakan sebuah sistem yang terdiri dari beberapa struktur yang unik dan terdiri dari satuan-satuan tertentu.

hallo guys selamat datang kembali di blog saya, kali ini saya akan membahas mengenai linguistik. hal  ini sebetulya untuk memenuhi tugas kuliah yah, tapi  dengan tugas ini kita bisa mendapatkan ilmu baru untuk menambah wawasan kita. Dan saya mau berbagi  untuk kita semua , so selamat membaca:)

Berbicara mengenai linguistik mungkin kata ini tidak terlalu familiar ditelinga kita, bahkan mungkin kita tidak mengerti apa  sih linguistik itu?. Linguistik adalah  cabang ilmu yang mempelajari tentang bahasa seperti makna bahasa, bentuk bahasa  dan apapun yang berkaitan dengan bahasa, dan orang yang mempelajari linguistik disebut Linguis. Linguis tidak harus fasih dalam berbagai bahasa, tetapi yang lebih penting adalah bagaimana para linguis mampu menganalisis dan menjelaskan fenomena-fenomena yang terjadi pada sebuah bahasa.Bapak Linguistik modern adalah ferdinand de saussure (1857-1913). bukunya tentang bahasa berjudul course de linguistique Generale yang diterbitkan pertama kali tahun 1916.

setelah mengetaui apa itu linguistik tentu kita berpikir bahwa ternyata ilmu linguistik itu penting untuk dipelajari, apalagi  contohnya seperti saya yang adalah mahasiwa pendidikan bahasa inggris, tentu saja harus memahami linguistik ya  guys.

Bahasa adalah hal yang sering kita gunakan dalam kehidupan kita sehari-hari untuk berkomunikasi antara satu dengan yang lainnya.. Tanpa bahasa tidak mungkin komunikasi bisa berjalan dengan baik, bahkan mungkin dunia tidak akan berjalan dengan baik tanpa adanya komunikasi. Bahasa adalah hal yang tak terpisahkan dari manusia hal ini juga berarti ilmu linguistik sangat dekat dengan kehidupan kita sehari-hari.  pada umumnya lingustik biasanya lebih mempelajari bahasa secara lisan, bukan tulisan.

Dikutip dari  laman " The University Of Arizona" ada beberapa cabang ilmu linguistik yaitu:

1. phonetics/fonetik dan Phonolgy/fonologi adalah cabang dari ilmu linguistik yang mempelajari tentang bunyi yang muncul dalam setiap penggunaan bahasa, termasuk bagaimana caranya menghasilkan suatu suara  tertentu dan membedakannya dengan suara lain. Disini kita akan mempelajari/memahami jenis huruf vokal, konsonan, dan bagaimana cara pengucapan dan penggunaannya.
2. morphology/morfologi  mempelajari bagian terkecil dari bahasa yang memiliki arti (mofem). dalam cabang ini kita akan mempelajari suatu bahasa dengan sangat detail sampai potogan-potongan kecil dari suatu bahasa.
3. syntax/sintaksis ilmu yang ini mempelajari tentang pola dari suatu bahasa termasuk bagaimana noun phrase terbentuk, begitu pula dengan clause dan sentence. meskipun sebenarnya aturan ini tidak selalu sama disemua bahasa. misalnya dalam bahasa inggris kita menyebut  sweet banana (yang merupakan noun phrase adj+noun) sedangkan dalam bahasa Indonesia kita menyebut pisang manis ( dengan aturan yang terbalik yaitu noun+adj).
4. semantics/semantik dan pragmatics/pragmatik ini digabungkan karena sama-sama membahas tentang makna bahasa. semantik lebih berfokus pada hubungan/relasi antarkata, frasa, termasuk bagaimana makna dari kata tersebut. pada ilmu ini kita bisa mengetahui bahwa satu kata bisa memiliki makna yang berbeda (polisemi).

jenis-jenis teks dalam bahasa inggris

1.    Descriptive Text

            Kane (2000: 352), Descriptive text is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds, tastes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of perception. Jadi, jika disimpulkan dari penjelasan Kane di atas, tulisan deskriptif bermakna teks yang menjelaskan tentang pengalaman yang berhubungan dengan pancaindera, seperti apa bentuknya, suaranya, rasanya. Kebanyakan teks deskriptif memang tentang pengalaman visual, tapi nyatanya pengalaman selain dari indera penglihatanpun bisa digunakan dalam descriptive text.

            Namun secara khusus, descriptive text adalah, "...... is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing." [teks yang menjelaskan gambaran seseorang atau benda. Tujuannya adalah mengambarkan atau mengungkapkan orang, tempat atau benda tertentu].

·      Struktur teks descriptive terdiri dari.

v  Identification : berisi penggambaran umum obyek yang akan dideskripsikan.

v  Description : berisi penggambaran secara detail mengenai obyek yan dideskripsikan.

Contoh Descriptive Text

My Garden

            I love gardening. I have a small garden in my backyard. In the garden, there are some flowers. There are daffodils, Cambodian flowers, orchids, red roses and white lilies. My oldest daughter, Annisa, is crazy about red roses. She always helps me watering the flowers in the afternoon. I love all the flowers in my garden.

2.    Narrative Text

            Teks narrative adalah sebuah teks yang berisi cerita dan kisah suatu kejadian yang mengikuti alur waktu penulis. Teks narrative biasanya digunakan sebagai hiburan bagi para pembaca dengan berbagai kejadian seolah-olah kejadian tersebut benar-benar dialami pembaca. Menurut Derewianka (1991), the purpose of narratives is to entertain, to teach or inform, to embody the writer’s reflections on experience, and to nourish and extend the reader’s imagination.

·      Struktur teks narrative adalah sebagai berikut.

v  Orientation: berisi pengenalan cerita yang akan diangkat biasanya terdapat pengelan tokoh dan latar belakang lainnya.

v  Complication: berisi inti cerita dari kisah tersebut yang ditandai dengan adanya konflik yang terjadi terhadap tokoh cerita.

v  Resolution: bagian akhir dari sebuah cerita yang ditandai dengan penyelesaian konflik.

v  Coda: berisi kesimpulan dari cerita.

Contoh Narrative Text

The Mouse And The Frog

  Once, there was a mouse which made of close friendship with a frog.

            One day, the frog said to the mouse; “Let’s bind ourselves together with a string so that we may never get separated”. The mouse agreed. Both tied themselves together leg to leg. It went quite well on land. When they came to a small pool, it was a tragic for the mouse.

            In the end, the frog kept swimming across the small pool dragging the mouse with him. Soon, the mouse drowned and floated on the surface of the pool.

   Orientation dalam contoh tersebut terdapat pada ada seekor tikus yang berteman baik dengan katak. Complication pada bagian ketika tikus dan katak sepakat mengikat diri mereka dengan seutas tali agar tidak terpisahkan. Namun musibah bagi tikus saat mencapai ke kolam. Resolution dan coda pada bagian katak yang tetap berenang menyebrangi kolam sambil menyeret tikus yang sudah mengapung di permukaan.

3.    Report Text

            Report merupakan teks yang berisi informasi apa saja yang terjadi dalam sebuah lingkup. Tujuan umum dari teks report adalah memberikan gambaran umum tentang kejadian yang baru saja terjadi melalui pengamatan dan analisis yang sistematis. report dalam concise oxford dictionary edisi 10, diartikan sebagai (1) an account given of a matter after investigation or consideration. (2) a piece of information about an event or situation. jika disimpulkan, secara bahasa report text adalah teks yang berfungsi untuk memberikan informasi tentang suatu peristiwa atau situasi, setelah diadakannya investigasi dan melalui berbagai pertimbangan.

·      Struktur dari report adalah sebagai berikut.

v General classification: berisi gambaran umum mengenai suatu kejadian.

v Description: berisi deskripsi dari kejadian yang ingin disampaikan.

Thunder Lightning

            Thunder Lightning is a sudden, shocked, and very fast electric force between the cloud and ground, or between clouds. The speed of  thunder can be several miles long. It is so hot, with average temperatures of 34,000 ° Celsius, that cause surrounding air suddenly expanding with a loud explosion and sounds. This is why sometimes we can hear thunder. The most dangerous type of cloud caused by lightening is called cumulonimbus. (report text).

            When the cloud rises high enough, the moisture freezes and creates crystal ices and snowflakes. It began to fall, pushing the rain on the way down. This is more humid, rainy air, and it is the friction between those who generate static electricity. When the cloud is fully charged with electricity, it will burst as a flash of lightning. So lightning suddenly appears before the rain and the sounds are very loud.

            Pada contoh diatas, general classification berada pada penjelasan bahwa petir adalah gesekan listrik yang terjadi secara tiba-tiba, seketika, dan sangat cepat antara awan dengan tanah atau antara awan dengan awan. Kalimat selanjutnya masuk pada description.

4.    Recount Text

            Recount is the text telling the reader what happened. It retells a past event. It begins by telling the reader who was involved, what happened, where this event took place and when it happened (Pardiyono, 2007: 63). Recount is written to retell events with the purpose of either informing or entertaining their audience (or both). Teks recount merupakan sebuah bentuk teks yang biasanya digunakan untuk menceritakan kejadian masa lampau. Ciri utama dari teks recount adalah kalimat yang berbentuk lampau atau past tense.

·  Struktur dari recount adalah sebagai berikut.

v Orientation: paragraf pembuka yang berisi pengenalan dan latar belakang kejadian.

v Events: paragraf berisi kejadian yang pernah dialami oleh subyek.

v Reorientation: berisi kesimpulan dari kejadian yang dialami.

I also went to the cinema with my lover to see movie. It was a very funny movie. The next morning I went to my grandparent’s house with my dad and my brother. Evaluation

            The initial package of the product is round bowl made of thick plastic with tight cap on top of it. The colour of the package is green. There are two large round stickers containing the name of the product and also the elements or ingredients of the product on the cap and on the bottom of the package. The initial package contains 300 ml of the aloe vera gel. Currently, this product is also available in the form of tube which contains 250 ml of the gel.

Interpretation

            The original package of the product is too large to be brought in a trip, but we can solve it by having the tube version instead of the bowl version. The description of the product on the sticker is in Korean, so it may not be friendly for users from other countries such as Indonesia. The texture of the gel allow us to use just a few of it every time we want to apply it to our skin, so it is very economical. The combination of alcohol and also spearmint extract has made the fragrance of aloe vera from the gel to be strong, it may be relaxing and fresh for some users but may also be uncomfortable for others.

Summary

            This product is very good for our skin, it can help us to nourish our skin so we can have beautiful, glowing and healthy skin.
